Magnus and Robin's journeyMagnus and Robin were rescued from the October 2007 sales at Chagford. These sales are terribly stressful for all of the horses, and for many it marks the beginning of a final, pitiful journey to slaughter. Look at the lowered heads, closed eyes, and pinched mouths of these poor ponies - how can this be right?
They really know how to cram them into those pens......
In general the ponies were making more money than they have in previous years. Gone are the days, thankfully, of "buy one get one free" or 4 for a pound, but there were
still ponies available for the 10 guinea reserve.
The general condition of the ponies this year was good but many
of the foals were extremely wormy. Coloured or pretty foals, like this one, are usually lucky and go off to private homes and, hopefully, a good life. The plain black, brown or bay colts are the ponies that are likely to end up as meat. There is another sale at Tavistock in December. If you are going along to buy a pony please consider these little colts. Lots of time and patience is needed, plus the cost of gelding, but they make extremely good children's ponies. Otherwise they will probably end up as pet food.
Magnus and Robin arrive at Rainbow. The journey was very stressful for them, but at least they'll be safe and well cared for.
